Poll
Question: Limit on option contracts
Option 1: Keep rules as written and only allow 3 total per roster. This would limit the ability to trade for a player that has an option if you already have 3 on your roster. votes: 3
Option 2: Remove the line that limits 3 option contracts per roster and only enforce the the 3 option limit per off-season free agency. votes: 10

It has been brought to our attention that there may be some misunderstaning on the rules surrounding the number of option contracts allowed per roster.

We have this line:
QuoteYou can have a total of 3 option contracts on your roster.  (Example: 3 year contract, but you can determine to cancel it after year two or extend it to the 3rd year.....2016TO2017.)

and then we have this line:
QuotePlayers can have team options in their contracts. Three options are allowed per offseason. No options are allowed for in season free agents. The option can be designated at any point in the contract with the exception of players over $10 million where the option must come after season 2 or later. If you choose to designate the option for multiple years, the player receives that amount for the entire period.  Free-Agent options are not eligible to be renewed on a yearly basis.

The intent of the rule was to limit how many options you could assign through off-season free agency but not limit trades.   In order to prevent confusion, we are offering the poll options to get the leagues input on how to move forward.

Thanks.

I have similar wording in a couple of my other leagues. Limiting options is a good idea, but in appreciation for the lack of flexibility in trading, those leagues have allowed acquiring one or two options by trade in a season.

In another league, the limit of three remains, but you can add another in a trade by making a decision on one that's already on your roster first.

Either way, it is not a good idea to allow for basically unlimited options. While I don't mind trading for some number beyond three, with considerations, I can't vote for removing the limit altogether.

My reasoning is that you should be allowed to acquire as many option contracts via trade as you want since trades keep a league and competition alive. But if you have more than 3 option contracts on your roster you should not be able to add any additional option contracts in FA since those contracts can kill the FA market.

So, yeah, with that in mind, all in for the second option.
